 How to reach Aveiro

 

City of Aveiro

Aveiro is situated on the estuary of Vouga river and it is surrounded by a system of marshlands that run 50km parallel to the sea. The town has famous canals where moliceiro boats sail (their colourful painting is also famous), bridges and pastel-coloured houses are somewhat reminiscent of Amsterdam or Venice. Aveiro is actually known has the portuguese Venice. Deserving special mention: Cathedral (15th-18th centuries) and its gothic cross; Misericórdia Church; São Bartolomeu and Senhor das Barrocas chapels; 18th-century churches of Santo António, Nossa Senhora da Apresentação and São Gonçalo; the Regional Museum (housed in the ancient Convento de Jesus); the town hall (website); the train station and its beautiful tiles from the old Fonte Nova factory (1916) now known as the Centro Cultural e de Congressos de Aveiro; the Infante D. Pedro park; the Barra and Costa Nova beaches (the last one is also known for its typical beach houses); Humberto Delgado square; Carcavelos bridge; S. Roque canal. University of Aveiro

The University of Aveiro was founded in 1973 and today it is one of the best universities in Portugal. It has an important part on the connection with other universities (national or international) and enterprises. Nowadays, the university has 13 000 students, 42 buildings and the campus’ current area comprehends 92 football fields. Travel to Aveiro – EUROPT 2010

Aveiro is located 90km from the Porto Airport (en: Oporto) and 250km from Lisbon Airport. However is quite easy and quick to travel from any of these cities to Aveiro: 2h30 from Lisbon, 40min from Porto.

 

By road

From the north using the A1 motorway or from the east using the A25. Take the A1 motorway headed to Lisbon. Exit the A1 in the direction of Aveiro and take the A25. There are two exits to the city from the A25, first "Aveiro-Norte" and some kilometres further on, the "Aveiro" exit. This second exit is the best for reaching the University of Aveiro.
From the south using the A1 motorway. Take the A1 motorway in the direction of Porto. Exit the motorway at "Aveiro-Sul/Águeda" (exit 15) and follow the EN235 road directly to the University Campus. From the south, using the A8 and A17 motorways. Exit the motorway at "Aveiro-Sul” and follow the EN235 road directly to the University campus.

 

Flying to Portugal

The closest airport is Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport in Oporto, located 70kms to the north of Aveiro. Portela International Airport in Lisbon is located 250kms to the south of Aveiro. For more information click here.

 

From Porto (en: Oporto) to Aveiro

The trip between the airport and the railway station (called Porto-Campanhã), which has direct rail connections to Aveiro, can be done by taxi for around 20€ and takes around 30 minutes. A less expensive way to reach the Porto-Campanhã railway station is to use the Metro, Violet (E) Line, which has a terminal at the airport.
The trips between the airport and the railway station take about 32 minutes. Click here for Metro information. The train journey to Aveiro takes between 40 minutes if you take the Alfa Pendular train and Intercidades and one hour if you take a regular train. There are many trains running regularly to Aveiro from Porto. Click here for train timetables. The train journey from Porto-Campanhã to Aveiro takes between 40 minutes and 1h15 (and a single ticket may cost between 2.5€ and 15€), depending on the type of train used.
The train journey from Porto-Campanhã to Aveiro using the "Alfa" and "Intercidades" trains takes around 40 minutes and costs betwen 9€ and 13€. There are (at least) one train every hour from 6.00AM to 8.30PM.
The train journey can also be made using the suburban trains and takes around 70 minutes and costs 2.15€. There are (at least) one train every hour from 5.00AM to 1.00AM (next day).

Aveiro railway station is located in the centre of the city about 15 minutes walking distance or 5-minute taxi ride from the conference venue.

By car from Porto Airport: At the airport there are various car hire agencies. Follow the signs for the A1 motorway in the direction of Lisbon (there is a toll charge of around 3.5€, and can be paid in cash or with a credit/debit card). Leave the A1 at the exit for Aveiro and take the A25.

 

From Lisbon to Aveiro

If you’re arriving by plane, the best way to come to Aveiro is by train from Lisboa-Oriente railway station. To get to the train station, you can take a taxi, which takes about 10 minutes and costs around 10€. Click here for train timetables.

By train from Lisbon airport: The simplest way of transportation to Aveiro is by train. From the airport to Lisboa-Oriente railway station, the taxi ride takes about 10 minutes and costs around 10€. Also, there are buses to the station for about 1€. Given the distance between Lisbon and Aveiro, it is best to use the fast train services (Alfa or Intercidades). The journey will take around 2h30 and a single ticket costs up to about 20€. Information on train prices and timetables are available at www.cp.pt.

By car from Lisbon Airport: There are various car-hire agencies at the airport. From the airport, follow the signs for the A1 motorway in the direction of Porto. Leave the motorway at "Aveiro-Sul/Águeda" (exit 15) and take the EN235 directly to the city centre. The toll charge for use of the motorway is around 15€ and can be paid in cash or with a debit card.

 

University Campus

Aveiro railway station is located at about 20 minutes walking distance or 5 minutes taxi ride from the University Campus. To reach the Campus, you can also use the bus (green line) which departs at regular intervals from outside the railway station.
